Hands on Mathematics for CS

The seminar will take place partly in the seminar room 0.13 and partly in the computer lab 1.03 in building 45 once a week on Thursdays at 16:00 - 18:00. The first introductory seminar is scheduled for Thursday, 20.10.2005 at 16:00. in Room 0.13.

Abstract

The goal of this seminar is to have hands-on experience on doing interactive mathematics learning in the adaptive learning environment ActiveMath. This seminar is largely project-oriented and allows/requires to experience mathematics (inter)actively. This includes using the system and its content and exercises as well as contributing to the content, visualizations, tools, organization of learning with ActiveMath. Note that making mistakes and discovery of mistakes will help you in learning.

  • Introductory mathematics (1st year)
  • Java useful

Helpful literature

These books and links are only recommendations. You do not need to buy them since they are present in the computer science library. Furthermore, we will mostly work with mathematical content which is provided online by the learning environment ActiveMath.

Organisation

In this seminar you will have to work interactively with ActiveMath. Each week, you will get homework for solving mathematical problems. Your solution should reflect your solving approach in detail, e.g. which steps did you apply and why. You will have to present your results with PowerPoint or on the blackboard. Moreover you will have to implement mathematical ideas in Java. Steps of the seminar will include
  • self-assessment experience and planning to learn
  • computer-supported learning
  • instruct your fellow students
  • comparison of scenarios
  • develop(and implement) new ideas, e.g.,
    • on adaptation
    • applets
    • exercises
    • coaching/help
    • usage of ActiveMath
    • tools
Exercises will deal with ActiveMath exercises. Moreover, you are supposed to maintain an ePortfolio on a regular basis. See the following URLs: Homework exercises are grouped into three difficulty levels marked by stars. A star denotes how much time you have for elaboration: one star for a week, two stars for two weeks and three stars for three weeks. You do not have to solve every exercise, but you have to collect enough stars. You can choose what exercises you want to solve and present. Some exercises will be assigned to everybody in order to compare different solutions. It won't be possible to collect only 'one-star-exercises'. Thus, you have to deliver:
  • at least one one star exercises
  • at least one two star exercises
  • at least one three star exercise
Delivering more exercises means collecting bonus points, which might improve your grade. We group the seminar into three sections:

  1. Session 1-5:
  2. Session 6-10:
  3. Session 11-15:

You have to work at least 2 exercises per section.
