The assembling tool is a rich-client application that offers the student to create manually his own table of contents and to upload them to ActiveMath. It comes with an easy-to-use graphical user interface and is an alternative to preauthored and dynamically created books by authors and the tutorial component.
The goals of the assembling tool are to support the learner's meta-cognitive reasoning such as planning, reflecting, structuring and presentation as well as to help memorising knowledge and to work with content actively.
To create table of contents, the student can drag-and-drop learning items from the browser and order them by introducing (sub) sections. At any time, he can upload or save an (intermediate) table of contents and continue the work later. The assembling tool can interact with the user model for maintaining notes, with the tutorial component for retrieving additional learning items, and with the search tool for displaying the content of a learning item.
